literally, "Church of the toothless one"; Gaelic name for the town and county of Wicklow, just south of Dublin.
Although Wicklow is hardly well-known, its name is a good illustration of the vast gulf between most Gaelic place-names and their English counterparts. Many Irish people (myself included, for the most part) dislike the arbitrariness of the anglicized names, which often have nothing whatsoever to do with the original names, having been assigned, Ellis Island fashion, by some hostile English functionary.
